Rising Star Jared Harrington

Tyler Cox: We talked about a year and a half ago, what if any, changes to your recruitment have there been?
Jared Harrington: I've talked on the phone with Cal State and Wingate University invited me to their showcase camp. That's it really.

TC: Which schools are you interested in right now? Do you have a top 5?
JH: As of right now I don't have any interest. I'm fairly unknown and I plan on making my top 5 when more schools are interested in me.

TC: What do you look for in a program? What would it take for a school to get a commitment from you?
JH: I look fr a family atmosphere, great coaching staff, a winning program and if the school says I can make an impact their program as soon as possible. If I like the coaching staff, I will most likely commit.

TC: Other than from me, what have you heard about NKU?
JH: Nothing really, I haven't done my research on many schools yet.

TC: What is a strength that you feel that you do better than anybody?
JH: My scoring ability

TC: You're only a sophomore, so you obviously have some time to grow more as a player. What do you feel you need to work on before you head to play for a D1 program?
JH: My strength and conditioning, agility and vocal leadership.

TC: What is the best characteristic that a basketball player could have?
JH: The bet characteristic that a basketball player could have is leadership.

TC: Do you have this characteristic?
JH: Yes.

TC: What style of player are you? Explain.
JH: I am a scoring PG/SG. I can lead a team. I can play a half court set or I can push the ball. I'm a hard worker.

TC: Finally, who do you think is going to win the NBA title? And Why?
JH: I think the Heat will win. They play well together as a team and they overpower everybody in the league.

Interview With Daniel Camps

When it comes to the art of flying high for a dunk, Daniel Camps has got that down pat. Camps is in the class of 2013 and has committed to play for NKU and coach Bezold. Daniel played for Jack Britt Fayetteville North Carolina. Camps joins Dean Danos, Cole Murray and Deontae Cole in the incoming recruiting class. Daniel Camps let us interview him.

Tyler Cox (Norse Sports): How did you get your start with basketball?
Daniel Camps: I got my start in basketball from watching my sister play. Every game of hers I went to I always found a way to get a ball in my hand. When it comes to basketball she's the one I look up to because I grew up watching her. She was a 2x state champion for basketball in high school.

TC: Who is your biggest influence or inspiration?
DC: My biggest influence and inspiration without a doubt is my family. They've been my support system since day 1 and have never left my side.

TC: What is your biggest accomplishment so far as a basketball player?
DC: My biggest accomplishment as a basketball player so far has to be committing to coming to Northern Kentucky. I've won a couple of MVPs and MOPs, but I've never won a championship. Personally nothing adds up to committing to go play Division 1 basketball.

TC: Before a game, what gets you loose, or your mind right for a game?
DC: Before the game I always listen to music. The genre usually depends on my mood during the day. It might be country, rap, RnB, pop, even classical. Another thing I do as well to get loose is dance, even tho I can't dance and have no rhythm. I just dumb dance.

TC: I like to ask everyone that I interview this but, what player would you like to play one on one, dead or alive, and sit down and talk with them and why?
DC: One person I would really love to play one on one with and sit down and talk to would have to be my little brother Chino. He died in a car accident almost 2 years ago this coming June. We were teammates and had plans to lead Jack Britt. He had a crazy work ethic and I would give anything to sit, talk and play one on one with him again.

TC: What is the best advice you have been given?
DC: My mother always tells me "never act cocky, there's always somebody out there better than you"

TC: What was the recruiting process like for you, and likes? Dislikes?
DC: The recruiting process is very stressful. One thing I dislike about it is the word 'interest' which is thrown out there easily and can be taken many different ways. I did a Post Grad year at prep school because during my high school year I had some Division 2 offers and a lot of Division 1 interest, but nothing was coming in. So going to prep school got my name out there. One thing I like about the recruiting process is the official visits. It's always a fun time meeting new people and and meeting the team for the first time.

TC: You had offers from Brown, Mercer, Miami(OH), NKU and Tennessee-Martin, were those the only schools on your list?
DC: Fairleigh Dickinson, Oakland, and Western Michigan were in consideration on my list.

TC: Out of those schools why NKU?
DC: Consistency. Ever since they saw me play I was constantly contacted by them. Also I chose NKU because it's a perfect fit for me with my style of play. The coaching staff are great people and I know they're going to push me to be the best.

TC: As you know NKU is on "probation" for post season play for another 3 years. In your senior season NKU will be eligible to go to the NCAA tournament. How much does that excite you to know you could be playing in the NCAA tournament?
DC: Very excited, it makes me want to work even harder and push my teammates even harder so the first year we are eligible to go, we make it.

TC: You aren't the only recruit that NKU has coming in next year. Have you talked with the other recruits such as Dean Danos, Cole Murray, Deontae Cole?
DC: I've talked to Dean and tweeted with Cole. I've heard many great things about them and I can't wait to get up there and finally play with them.

TC: What is something you want to work on before you come to campus?
DC: Becoming a better ball handler and consistent 3 point shooter.

TC: To piggy back on that question what are some of your strengths? Weaknesses?
DC: Some of my strengths have to be attacking the basket and rebounding, but mainly finishing above the rim. My weakness would have to be constantly making the 3 point shot.

TC: What will be your role on the team next year?
DC: I feel as if my role next year will be attacking and rebounding. I'm the kind a player that goes after it. Fill in the spots where you need it on the floor.

TC: Is there anything you'd like to tell Norse Nation?
DC: Thank you for this opportunity in becoming apart of the Norse family. I can't wait to set foot on campus and help lead NKU to winning games and championships. Be prepared.

NKU To the A-10? Is It Possible?

Is a move to the Atlantic 10 a realistic thought for both Northern Kentucky University and the Atlantic 10? Why not? The A-10 will be looking for schools to add and NKU might be a viable option for the conference. Not only that, but what a great way for NKU to get its name out to the National spotlight?

There will be four teams exiting the Atlantic 10 conference next year, Xavier, Temple, UNC at Charlotte and Butler.  Xavier and Butler will be joining the New Catholic 7 Big East while Temple will be joining... lets just call it Big East TBD and UNC at Charlotte will be re-joining Conference USA. What does that mean? Four teams will e leaving, four teams will need to fill the void in the A-10.

Why Would the A-10 Look At NKU?

One thing that conferences look at when adding a new school is the their facilities.  Check. NKU has a brand new soccer stadium, the Bank of Kentucky Center.  Academically they have the new state of the Arc Griffin Hall. So Northern has the facilities to compete.

Another aspect that conference's look at is the level at which you can compete athletically.  The basketball program has proven that they can compete fiercely within in their conference already this year.  Also, don't discount the fact that they beat West Virginia last season and almost won against UC, all the while being a D11 school.  The same goes for the women's basketball team, they can compete with the best as well.  The men's and women's soccer teams are both top shelf respectively, and also the baseball team is looking to prove themselves in their first year in D1.  One other little thing that could help NKU is that they don't have a football team.

As mentioned A-10 will be losing Xavier. Xavier of course is located in Cincinnati, which is a big TV market, the Atlantic 10 would not want to lose that big of a market. Cincinnati and Xavier bring a lot of money and ratings for the conference. As many of you know, NKU is about 5 miles from Cincinnati and is essentially in the Cincy market. Now, I'm not saying that NKU would have the same effect as Xavier money and rating wise, because it wouldn't, but you can't just ignore NKU and them being in greater Cincy.

Why the A-10 Would Not Look at NKU

Northern Kentucky University hasn't exactly been around that long. Founded in 1968, NKU hasn't had the time to build tradition like the other schools have.  Along the same thought NKU has only been in the the Division 1 ranks for a little over 7 months now.  That may, and probably would be the biggest reason why the A-10 wouldn't extend a bid t join their conference.

The attendance for most basketball games has been weak. I have not been t a soccer game in awhile, so I am not aware of the attendance situation there.  But, in basketball the attendance has not been the best.  I'm sure that when a team like UMass, VCU or Dayton come to town that the place will be packed, but you have to have good regular attendance.

Other than those points, that's really the only way I see NKU being a negative for the A-10.

Why A-10 Would Be A Good Move for NKU

Better teams coming to town equals better attendance, which in turn equals more money.  With, the attendance going up would mean, better game atmosphere, and a more enjoyable experience when coming to a game.  Chance to see better players from the other teams.

Better competition means at better RPI, for a chance to get an at large bid to the NCAA tourney, if they don't win the conference tournament.  Lots of opportunity to prove yourself to the selection committee.

What better way to get your name out to the national media and spotlight than making a big move like this? It would bring in tons more money to the school than being in the Atlantic Sun. It wold be easier for coach Bezold to recruit big time recruits. Traveling to the New York, Boston and Philadelphia areas would help the recruiting a ton, not just for basketball but for all sports. Tons of talent in those areas. 4 of the teams in the A-Sun are in Florida, why would a recruit want to leave the Florida sun to come up to the Kentucky cold?

Why Joining the A-10 Would Be Bad for NKU

I must say, there really isn't any argument for why it would be a bad thing for NKU to join.  Only one I can think of would be, that with the tougher competition comes a tougher time to get into the NCAA tourney, ad esstentially it would take longer to make a rise.  Other than that I can't think of reason why it would be bad. Maybe you can.

Stetson Cruises in 2nd Half to victory

XFPADHHCBORMGPM.20111114215850.jpg

This game was truly a tale of two sides. NKU jumped out on Stetson and at one time led 27-20 eventually slipping in the waning moment in the 1st half to allow Stetson to crawl back within a 4 point deficit 31-27. Chad Jackson for NKU was the star of the 1st half as well as the game for the Norse. He posted a impressive stat line of 15 points and 8 rebounds nearly missing a double double. Joel Naburgs for Stetson stole the show and led the Hatters to a impressive 71-59 win. Naburgs had 17 points while dishing out 8 assists. This led to a route in the 2nd half where Stetson outscored NKU 44-28.

NKU falls to 4-10 and 2-4 in the A-Sun, they play again @ Florida State Gulf Coast this Saturday at 5:15
